The main towns of Fira and Oia – a snow-drift of white Cycladic houses that line the cliff tops and spill like icy cornices down the terraced rock – will take your breath away. And then there’s the sunsets, the glorious sunsets. And the island’s fascinating history, best revealed at the Minoan site of Akrotiri. Plus (whew!) excellent wineries and quality restaurants. Multicoloured beaches, hot springs, evening cruises and more. But, behind the scenes it’s another matter. For all its exposure and popularity, the island is now at bursting point; it’s being smothered with development. Luxury digs. Infinity pools. Instagrammers. And too much love. Given the massive crowds, including cruise passengers, who flock here during the holiday season, the island’s infrastructure – roads, garbage, water, and ferry port – struggles to cope.
